I want to break this discussion down into two sections.  The first is to make you aware of resources available through the bar association and in the second I will address some informal steps you can take.  In this section I will talk about the Mississippi Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program (LJAP) but every state has the equivalent resource available.[1]  While the title references lawyers and judges – this resource is also available to law students.  LJAP assists law students, lawyers, and judges with substance abuse, mental health issues, as well as other issues that impact a lawyer’s practice and well-being.  All assistance provided by LJAP is confidential.  They do not report to the bar with regard to your bar exam application or to disciplinary authorities when you are licensed.  They have trained professionals on staff that can provide assistance and can develop a plan to help address any issues you have.  The service is free.  This really is an underutilized service.  Be aware that it is out there and do not be afraid to use it.

[1] The contact information for Mississippi’s LJAP program is:  https://www.msbar.org/programs-affiliates/lawyers-judges-assistance-program.aspx.  There is some excellent material on the website about signs & symptoms of stress/burnout; substance abuse; and mental/emotional health issues.
